SUPER73 has never really made e-bikes that look like regular bicycles. Based in Orange County, California, the brand has built its identity around chunky frames, fat tyres and a blend of motorcycle heritage and modern street culture. That distinctive approach has helped make SUPER73 feel as much like a lifestyle brand as an e-bike company.
Now, SUPER73 is making that world a little easier to get into. Starting at US$1,995, the new SUPER73-MZFT is the most affordable adult e-bike in the company’s current lineup, but you probably wouldn’t guess that just by looking at it. Nicknamed the “Backyard Brawler,” it keeps the low-slung, moto-inspired attitude SUPER73 is known for while introducing a smaller footprint, chunky JAKAL tyres, internal lockable storage and what the company calls its sturdiest frame yet.
That’s what makes the MZFT interesting. SUPER73 hasn’t completely reinvented its formula to chase a lower price. Instead, it’s taken much of the California attitude and motorcycle-inspired styling that made its bigger bikes recognizable, shrunk the package and lowered the barrier to entry — while adding a few genuinely useful ideas along the way.

SUPER73’s bikes have become pretty good at turning up in places you wouldn’t necessarily expect an e-bike to be, including an appearance in 2023’s ‘The Barbie Movie’. That pop-culture presence fits a brand that has always leaned heavily into style, but the MZFT brings it back to the bike itself — and, more specifically, makes that familiar SUPER73 experience easier for more riders to get into.
The MZFT sits low with a 27-inch (69cm) seat height, with SUPER73 recommending it for riders between 4-foot-10 and 5-foot-10. Its overall length is just over 55 inches, giving it a noticeably smaller footprint than some of the brand’s bigger machines, although at 85lb (38.6kg) it’s still a pretty substantial little thing. The aluminum frame rolls on chunky 16 x 4.5-inch JAKAL tyres, with two-piston hydraulic brakes at both ends.

The standard MZFT keeps the setup relatively straightforward. There’s no suspension here — it uses a rigid fork — while power comes from a 500W nominal motor paired with a thumb throttle and single-speed drivetrain. It’s sold as a Class 2 e-bike with a 20mph (32km/h) top speed, so this isn’t supposed to be the wildest or fastest SUPER73 in the garage. Instead, those compact proportions and lower seat should make it a much friendlier option for shorter riders, newcomers or anyone who simply wants something easy to jump on for a run around town.
You still get the everyday essentials, including LED lighting front and rear and a horn, while SUPER73 describes the new aluminum architecture as its sturdiest frame yet. That makes the “Backyard Brawler” nickname feel a little less like marketing fluff — it’s small and approachable, but SUPER73 clearly hasn’t designed it to feel fragile.

At US$1,995, the MZFT is now the cheapest way into SUPER73’s adult e-bike range, sitting below the US$2,395 MZFT SE and the larger machines further up the lineup. Two grand still isn’t exactly bargain e-bike territory, but for a brand that has always carried a premium, the MZFT makes that distinctive SUPER73 experience noticeably easier to get into.
And it sounds like SUPER73 wasn’t simply chasing a lower price. The company says feedback from its community played a significant role in developing the MZFT, alongside years of research and development. As CEO Travis Erwin puts it, the company wanted to combine its “deep history of moto culture” with a continued push towards innovation and accessibility, while keeping the SUPER73 experience centred around “adventure and individuality.”
That’s probably the biggest win here. SUPER73 hasn’t tried to make its cheapest adult bike look or feel like the cheap one. The MZFT still carries plenty of that unmistakable California attitude, only now it’s smaller, simpler and easier to get into, with enough clever touches — from the modular battery setup to lockable storage — to make it more than just a cut-price SUPER73.
