Move over, Aquaman—Jason Momoa has landed a new role with DC Comics, one he has wanted for years. After many rumours and speculation, it’s finally official Momoa will play Lobo, the funny and rude antihero.Reports say he will play this character in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will start filming in 2025.

For Momoa, this role isn’t just another gig—it’s personal. “I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favourite, and I’ve always wanted to play Lobo because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,’” Momoa said in an earlier interview. “I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a heck yes. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to spread any false news, but if they ever call me and ask me to play or audition, I’m all in.”

Now that the call has come, Momoa is bringing to life one of DC’s most outrageous and intriguing characters. Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, Lobo is the brash and bold bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia. Known for his violent nature, superhuman strength, and regenerative abilities, he’s about as far from PG as possible—DC’s wild answer to Marvel’s Deadpool.

The announcement comes at a crucial time for DC, which has been struggling to regain its footing at the box office. The entertainment company’s last five blockbuster releases have failed to make an impact. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam was panned by critics, Blue Beetle struggled to recoup its reported USD $125 million budget, and the Ezra Miller-led The Flash faced numerous controversies and legal troubles before its release. Even Momoa’s recent Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has struggled to connect with audiences, earning a low 33% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

After years of ups and downs, DC is starting a new chapter with James Gunn and producer Peter Safran, who took over DC Studios in 2022. One of the most exciting projects in this new era is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will also introduce Lobo to the big screen for the first time. The movie is set to release soon after Superman, starring David Corenswet, making it one of the first big steps in Gunn’s vision for DC.

The new Supergirl movie looks like it will stand out from past versions of the character. Milly Alcock, known for her role in House of the Dragon, will play Kara Zor-El, and Craig Gillespie is set to direct. Filming is scheduled to begin on January 13, 2025, with the movie set to release on June 26, 2026. James Gunn has suggested that this Supergirl will be tougher and more rugged than what fans are used to.

DC fans have talked about bringing Lobo to the screen for years. Jason Momoa has said for a long time that he wants to play the character, so it looks likely he’ll get the part. With Momoa’s bold style and Lobo’s wild comic book energy, many people think he’s a great match for the role. If DC nails the tone, Lobo could become one of the standout characters in this new era.
