  • Bucherer has opened the world’s highest Rolex boutique on Switzerland’s Mount Titlis.
  • The boutique sits more than 3,020 metres above sea level inside the new TITLIS Tower.
  • Herzog & de Meuron transformed a 1980s antenna tower into a cross-shaped Alpine landmark.
  • TITLIS Tower also contains Joseph’s Restaurant, an Alpine Lounge and the Horizon Deck.
  • Visitors reach the mountaintop boutique aboard the TITLIS Xpress and revolving TITLIS Rotair cable car.

Rolex boutiques usually occupy polished shopping streets, luxury malls and airport terminals where the hardest part of the journey is finding somewhere to park. Its newest location changes that considerably, placing the world’s highest Rolex boutique above a glacier in the Swiss Alps.

Operated by Bucherer, the approximately 200-square-metre boutique sits on the sixth floor of the newly opened TITLIS Tower near Engelberg. More than 3,000 metres above sea level, it offers Rolex’s familiar retail experience, with floor-to-ceiling views of snow-covered peaks and one of the most dramatic settings for luxury shopping.

So much for casually popping in to ask about a GMT-Master II.

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, TITLIS Tower transforms a former telecommunications structure into an Alpine destination containing a boutique, restaurant and panoramic viewing deck. Reaching it requires a journey through Switzerland’s mountain cableway system, while building it meant working around severe weather, restricted access and the logistical headache of delivering materials to the top of a glacier.

Inside Herzog & de Meuron’s TITLIS Tower

Long before anyone considered selling Rolex watches from it, the TITLIS Tower was a 56-metre telecommunications structure built during the mid-1980s. Its exposed position above 3,000 metres required a concrete base anchored deep into the limestone mountain, supporting a surprisingly slender steel framework designed to withstand strong winds, snow and freezing temperatures.

Rather than demolishing the original structure, Herzog & de Meuron extended it with two fully glazed horizontal volumes and four vertical circulation towers. The new sections overlap in a cross-shaped arrangement that resembles the Swiss cross when seen from above, while their external load-bearing structure keeps the interiors free from columns. The lower volume contains retail space, the upper level houses Joseph’s 140-seat restaurant and the Horizon Deck crowns the building with uninterrupted views in every direction.

Not exactly a quick shop fit-out.

Much of the tower’s original infrastructure remains part of the visitor experience. A weather-protected underground tunnel connects the mountain station with the building, glacier cave and technical areas hidden inside the rock. A reflective steel band guides visitors through the raw passage before they enter a cavern-like arrival hall and continue upward by lift through the external circulation towers.

Building at this altitude meant adapting schedules around snow, limited visibility and rapidly changing weather, while materials had to arrive by cable car or helicopter. Dennis Mildenberger, Bucherer’s Global Director of Store Design and Planning, summarized the challenge neatly — “The mountain sets the rules—and you quickly learn to respect them.” He added that “every delivery, every detail and every decision required an extra level of preparation, flexibility and commitment.”

Now open to visitors, the tower brings together the Rolex Boutique, Joseph’s Restaurant, Joseph’s Alpine Lounge and the Horizon Deck, which sits 55 metres above the glacier. On clear days, its 360-degree outlook stretches across the Alps toward Italy, Germany and France, while the restaurant and lounge offer a considerably warmer place to appreciate the landscape through glass.

Jacques Herzog described the tower’s first impression as “more James Bond than mountain hut,” which feels appropriate for a steel-and-glass landmark rising above a glacier with a Rolex boutique hidden inside it. The only slight problem is that 007 has been wearing OMEGA for quite some time. TITLIS Tower is also just the first major stage of a wider mountaintop redevelopment, with the new Peak Station currently scheduled for completion in 2029.

The Cable-Car Journey to Rolex’s Mountaintop Boutique

The journey begins in Engelberg, a mountain village around 45 minutes by train from Lucerne. From the TITLIS valley station, visitors board the eight-person TITLIS Xpress gondola, travelling through Trübsee before reaching Stand station higher up the mountain.

At Stand, the route continues aboard the TITLIS Rotair, the world’s first revolving aerial cable car. Its cabin rotates during the ascent, gradually opening views across the glacier and surrounding peaks before arriving at the summit station at 3,020 metres. Altogether, the cable-car journey from Engelberg takes roughly 30 minutes.

That limited access also made construction considerably more complicated, with building materials transported up the mountain by cable car or, when necessary, helicopter. As Pierre de Meuron explains, “the tower symbolizes a shift from purely functional structures towards a new generation of Alpine architecture.” The project has effectively turned an old piece of telecommunications infrastructure into a destination worth travelling up the mountain to experience.

Rolex acquired Bucherer in 2023, although the Swiss retailer retained its name and continues to operate independently. The TITLIS location is therefore a Bucherer-operated Rolex Boutique, but it gives the watchmaker something even its grandest city flagship cannot offer: a story that begins long before visitors reach the display cases.

From the summit station, visitors can follow the weather-protected Rock Passage into TITLIS Tower before taking a lift to the boutique, restaurant and Horizon Deck. For most of us, this will remain window-shopping through photographs—just with a considerably better view.

Subaru has surprised the automotive world by unveiling its STI prototype at the Tokyo Auto Salon, indicating the return of the WRX STI in a slightly different form. Although Subaru previously announced the end of the gas-powered WRX STI, this new prototype aims to reignite fans’ excitement. However, there’s a significant twist—this model does not include the iconic manual transmission.

Instead, Subaru has taken a more modern approach by equipping the WRX STI S210 with a “Subaru Performance Transmission,” a continuous variable transmission (CVT). Coupled with an all-wheel-drive system and an upgraded version of the 2.4-litre turbocharged flat-four engine, the S210 delivers 296 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque—an increase over the standard WRX’s 271 horsepower and 256 lb-ft of torque. While it’s a commendable increase in power, it’s still a step back compared to the previous STI S209, which produced 341 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque.

In addition to the powertrain changes, Subaru has introduced a variety of performance enhancements to keep the S210 sharp. The prototype features additional bracing, S210-specific adaptive dampers, coil springs, and 19-inch BBS forged wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires (255/35R-19). To accommodate the increased performance, the car is fitted with Brembo brakes, including six-piston callipers at the front featuring red accents and upgraded pads. The S210 also showcases distinctive styling elements such as a unique mesh grille, an S210 badge, red trim along the lower edge, and a more aggressive front bumper with vertical lighting elements and a lip spoiler. The subtle rear wing completes the performance aesthetic.

Inside the cabin, Subaru has equipped the S210 with carbon-fiber-backed Recaro seats, now featuring power adjustments—an unusual choice given the car’s performance focus. The rest of the cabin resembles the regular WRX, but with premium touches like microsuede-wrapped armrests and piano black trim on the dash and doors. And, of course, several S210 badges serve as reminders that this is not your average WRX.

Availability and Price

Subaru has confirmed that only 500 units of the S210 will be produced, making it an extremely limited edition. However, it remains unclear whether any units will reach markets outside Japan. The company has also announced that pricing will be revealed at a later date, but anticipate it to be higher than the previous S209, which retailed for approximately $64,880 in the U.S.

While the absence of a manual transmission has disappointed some enthusiasts, Subaru’s decision to prioritize the CVT aligns with the preferences of the Japanese market, where automatic transmissions prevail. Nevertheless, fans of the WRX STI legacy can take solace in the fact that the STI badge is making a comeback—though with some adjustments to modernize the performance car for today’s market.

This new STI is set to be a Japan-exclusive release, arriving this autumn. Given its limited production and unique features, the S210 will likely carry a higher price tag than its predecessors. While it may not be the high-revving, manual-only sports sedan that many enthusiasts anticipated, the STI S210 still holds a special place for Subaru fans, offering a blend of aggressive styling, modern performance features, and the return of the legendary STI nameplate.
