Complaints Policy & Process

Initial Assessment

Upon receiving a complaint, the complaints-handling team at Many Men Magazine will gather any additional necessary details. The team will then evaluate whether the complaint warrants further consideration or should be dismissed based on the following criteria:

  • The complaint satisfies the criteria for acceptable complaints, the eligibility requirements for filers, and the necessary submission procedures.
  • If relevant, the issue should be addressed through alternative processes, including referral to a third party, updating internal procedures, or escalation to the appropriate industry body.
  • The complaint has been adequately resolved.
  • Even if the facts stated in the complaint are accurate, they do not amount to a breach of Many Men Magazine’s Editorial Guidelines.
  • Addressing the complaint would necessitate an excessive allocation of resources compared to the importance of the potential breach, rendering it unsuitable for further review.

Secondary Complaints

Complaints that do not personally involve an identified individual or a person directly affected by the published material may be categorized as “Secondary Complaints.” In such cases, we consider various factors to determine whether the complaint will proceed, including:

  • The risk of exacerbating any potential invasion of privacy or harm caused to individuals or organizations directly affected.
  • The potential value in informing the complainant, media industry, or public about whether a breach occurred is significant, especially if the affected individuals or organizations cannot or choose not to file a complaint themselves.
  • The proportionality of resources needed to address the issue in relation to the significance of the potential breach.
  • Whether the situation requires the involvement of those directly affected.

Multiple Complaints

When multiple complaints regarding the same material are submitted, Many Men Magazine may address either a single complaint or a specific group of complaints.

  • Each complainant will be notified individually of this decision and the outcome whenever possible.
  • Many Men Magazine publicly shares the outcome on the council’s website in cases with a high volume of complainants.

Resolving Complaints

If Many Men Magazine chooses to address a complaint, it will be promptly resolved through phone or email. The communication will concentrate on whether Many Men Magazine took action regarding a previous complaint about the material or if the current complaint warrants further action.

Discontinuance

The complainant will be notified if Many Men Magazine chooses to halt consideration of a complaint. Within seven days of this notification, the complainant may request a review of the decision. Many Men Magazine considers the complaint resolved if the complainant does not seek a review, or if the review does not overturn the decision.

Review / Escalation

Many Men Magazine encourages individuals to escalate complaints to the appropriate industry body if they remain unresolved or if the complainant disagrees with the proposed resolution.

  • Many Men Magazine will fully cooperate with any requests from councils or industry bodies, regardless of their membership status or the origin of the complaint.
  • It will also publish any rulings issued by the council.
