For decades, the Parisian Maison has looked beyond traditional hands and hour markers, turning to planets, constellations, the Sun and the Moon for inspiration. That fascination with the night sky stretches deep into its history, including a moon-phase pocket watch created in 1929, and in 2026, Van Cleef & Arpels is once again looking upwards with a collection devoted to what it beautifully describes as the “poetry of the heavens.”

At the centre of that celestial story are two very different Midnight creations. The Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune transforms the movement of the Sun and Moon into a miniature spectacle on the wrist, while the Midnight Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs turns the practical idea of following two time zones into something considerably more romantic. While some watchmakers simply measure time, Van Cleef & Arpels prefers to tell stories with it — giving you another reason to look down at your wrist and, strangely enough, find yourself thinking about the sky.

Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune

Van Cleef & Arpels has been looking to the Moon for inspiration for almost a century, having created a moon-phase pocket watch as far back as 1929. The new Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune brings that fascination into the Maison’s Poetic Complications collection with a 42mm white-gold watch that combines its signature Jour/Nuit display with an astronomical moon phase. Across the deep black Murano aventurine glass dial, a guilloché yellow-gold Sun pursues a white mother-of-pearl Moon through a glittering night sky, turning something as ordinary as checking the time into a miniature celestial scene.

The beauty of the dial is that it is constantly changing, with two overlapping rotating discs moving at different speeds — the first completes its journey every 24 hours, carrying the Sun through the day/night display, while the second rotates once every 24 hours, 16 minutes and 27 seconds. Working together, they reproduce the Moon’s changing appearance throughout its lunar cycle, so what you see on the wrist reflects the phase of the Moon above rather than serving as decoration alone.

There is also a little theatre hidden inside. Pressing the pusher on the case activates an on-demand animation, allowing the Moon to emerge and reveal its current phase even when it would normally be hidden during the daytime display. Making all of this work was no small exercise either: Van Cleef & Arpels says the astronomical movement was developed entirely by its watchmaking workshops in Geneva and required four years of development.

Turn the watch over, and the story changes perspective through the caseback, which depicts a stylized lunar landscape, while an enamel Earth appears through the sapphire crystal above the automatic movement, creating the impression of looking back towards our planet from the surface of the Moon. It’s a beautiful finishing touch, and perhaps the best explanation of what Van Cleef & Arpels means by Poetry of the Heavens: this is serious mechanical watchmaking, but the mechanics are there to tell a story rather than become the story themselves.

Midnight Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs

The Midnight Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs may be the quieter of Van Cleef & Arpels’ two new Midnight creations, but there’s something particularly elegant about the way it approaches a travel watch. Housed in a more compact 38mm rose-gold case, it displays two time zones through separate apertures: Heure d’ici — “time here” — appears at the top of the dial, while Heure d’ailleurs — “time elsewhere” — sits below. Rather than relying on the familiar GMT hand, the watch uses synchronized jumping-hour displays and a retrograde minute hand, allowing both locations to be read in a clean and surprisingly unconventional way.

The dial is where Van Cleef & Arpels brings some of its jewellery-making character into the equation. Embossed brown enamel changes between warmer and cooler tones depending on the light, while a radiating guilloché-style pattern grows outward from a central piqué motif inspired by the Maison’s hallmark. Polished and satin-finished rose gold provides the contrast, and even the asymmetric placement of the displays and flowing script feels deliberate. It’s considerably less theatrical than the celestial display of the Phase de Lune, but that restraint suits a watch intended to make travelling between two parts of the world feel a little more romantic.

There’s one final celestial touch waiting on the back, where Van Cleef & Arpels has engraved a Moon illuminated by a guilloché Sun, tying the travel-focused watch back into the wider Poetry of the Heavens theme. And we rather like the contrast between these two Midnight releases: the Phase de Lune asks you to look towards the sky, while the Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs looks across the world instead. It’s a simpler proposition mechanically, but for someone who regularly travels between time zones, it may actually be the more practical watch of the pair.

What Do We Think of the Poetry of the Heavens Collection?

For us, these two watches show exactly why Van Cleef & Arpels deserves to be taken seriously as a watchmaker, not simply a jewellery house that also makes watches. There are plenty of complicated watches that impress you with numbers, but the Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune does something harder — it makes the complication feel emotional. Watching the Sun chase the Moon across that aventurine sky, knowing there is a four-year-developed astronomical mechanism underneath it all, is the sort of detail that makes you want to stop and actually look at your watch rather than simply check the time.

If we had to choose one, the Phase de Lune would be our pick without much hesitation. The Midnight Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs is arguably the more wearable and useful of the two, especially for frequent travellers, and we love the way it makes a dual-time complication look genuinely elegant rather than overly technical. But the Phase de Lune is the watch we would remember. It feels less like another luxury timepiece and more like a tiny piece of the night sky sitting on your wrist, which is probably the best compliment we can give a collection built around the Poetry of the Heavens.

Alright, car enthusiasts, get ready for a ride like no other because Nissan is taking the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon by storm! The event, running from January 10 through 12 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, is one of the biggest car shows in the world—think of it as Japan’s answer to SEMA. And this year, Nissan is coming in hot with an incredible lineup of cars and concepts, headlined by their boldest move yet: the electrification of the iconic R32 GT-R.

Under the leadership of Nissan EV powertrain engineer (and former R32 Skyline owner) Ryozo Hiraku, a dedicated team of volunteer engineers has been working on this all-electric R32 Skyline GT-R for over a year. This passion project features bespoke parts that’ll make any enthusiast drool, including genuine R32 GT-R wheels upsized to 18 inches and sleek carbon Recaro seats. It’s not just a car—it’s a love letter to Nissan’s heritage, with a bold step into the EV future.

What’s even more exciting is the context surrounding this reveal. Nissan, which recently finalized its mega-merger with Honda, has been hard at work redefining its brand identity while continuing to push boundaries in innovation. The merger has added more muscle to their engineering efforts, and the R32 EV is proof of that. Alongside this iconic conversion, Nissan is pulling out all the stops with a stunning lineup of models, blending performance, practicality, and a glimpse into the future of mobility.

Early feedback on the R32 GT-R EV was, let’s say, a little harsh. Critics weren’t thrilled about electrifying such a beloved icon. But now that we’ve gotten a closer look at what’s under the hood (or battery pack), the industry is paying attention. With bespoke engineering and a fresh take on a classic, this EV experiment might win over skeptics.

And the R32 EV is only the beginning. Nissan’s arsenal includes the sporty Fairlady Z, the beastly GT-R NISMO Special Edition, and the cutting-edge Ariya NISMO EV. For adventure lovers, concepts like the X-Trail Unwind and Remastered are ready to take you off-road in style. At the same time, disaster support vehicles and sporty family rides like the Aura AUTECH and Serena AUTECH Sports Specs show Nissan’s versatility.

When Nissan announced the R32 GT-R EV, the internet lit up with questions—and plenty of skepticism. How do you electrify a car as iconic as Godzilla without losing its soul? The R32 GT-R is a cultural symbol, beloved for its raw power, turbo growl, and mechanical precision. Swapping out the legendary RB26DETT engine for an electric motor seemed almost sacrilegious to purists.

But Nissan’s approach with the R32 EV is different—it’s a love letter to the original, designed to preserve its legacy for future generations. Unlike the futuristic (and polarizing) 1,000kW Hyper Force Concept, the R32 EV leans into nostalgia and passion. “I wondered if 30 years from now—2055 or beyond—owners of this incredible machine could still buy gasoline and enjoy driving it,” said Ryozo Hiraku, the project lead. “I saw merit in using electrical and digital technology to replicate the appeal of the R32 GT-R.”

EVs are still a tough pill for enthusiasts. Still, Nissan has done it thoughtfully, drawing inspiration from the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N and tapping legendary test driver Hiroyoshi Kato to refine the driving experience. With bespoke 18-inch wheels, carbon Recaro seats, and an eye on performance, this isn’t just a retrofit—it’s a new beast.

Inside the R32 GT-R’s Electric Powerhouse

Nissan’s goal with the R32 GT-R EV wasn’t to exceed the original 2.6-litre twin-turbo engine’s power but to match it. The team installed two 160kW electric motors with 340 Nm of torque and swapped the rear seats for a 62kWh battery from the LEAF NISMO RC02. The EV is still fine-tuned, but engineers have focused on keeping the torque-to-weight ratio in line with the original R32’s 280 PS (206 kW) and 353 Nm of torque.

Despite being about 370 kg heavier due to the battery and electric components, Nissan worked hard to maintain the R32’s legendary driving dynamics. The R32 EV stays true to the original’s focus on driving engagement rather than just power.

Nissan Skykline R32 GT-R EV | Image: Nissan

Nissan’s ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system, which debuted 35 years ago, has evolved in the R32 EV. With dual electric motors and advanced sensors, the torque distribution is faster and more precise, enhancing handling and stability.

The R32 EV uses a NISMO Sports suspension kit with Öhlins dampers to counteract the extra weight while ensuring responsive handling. Unlike most EVs, which are whisper-quiet, the R32 EV replicates the RB26DETT engine sound through cabin speakers. Paddle shifters simulate the experience of manual gear changes, even adding “shift shock” for extra immersion.

Upgraded brakes from the R35 GT-R, including larger rotors and monoblock callipers, ensure top-notch stopping power. The custom 18-inch wheels, inspired by the original R32 GT-R’s 16-inch alloys, accommodate the new braking system.
