Jake Paul and Canelo Alvarez are approaching the conclusion of negotiations for a high-stakes boxing match scheduled for this spring. According to ESPN, the fight is expected to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 3, with both athletes competing at the 200-pound cruiserweight limit. Furthermore, sources indicate that the match will be streamed exclusively on Netflix.
In his latest match, Paul took on retired boxing icon Mike Tyson, who was 58 at the time. Paul won the fight by an eight-round decision and garnered an impressive 64 million concurrent viewers on Netflix, yet he still hasn’t faced a truly elite boxer. Although the 28-year-old is a major draw in the sport, he has not competed at the highest level until now. In contrast, Alvarez has a rich championship history, having unified titles at 168 pounds and previously held a title at 175 pounds.
Alvarez typically competes twice a year, with fights scheduled for the Cinco de Mayo weekend and the Mexican Independence Day weekend in September. It remains uncertain whether his upcoming bout against Paul will affect his newly arranged match with Terence Crawford, set for the Mexican Independence Day weekend during Riyadh Season.
There has been ongoing speculation about a potential fight between Alvarez and Paul for several months. In a November interview on the Full Send Podcast, Alvarez discussed the possibility, remarking, “When I’m finished with boxing [at the elite level], why not?”
As both fighters approach an agreement, this matchup might become one of the most discussed events of the year.
