Grand Seiko is known for a level of consistency that’s hard to miss. The Japanese brand has earned its reputation for precision and attention to detail, and over the years, people have come to trust it to deliver quality without making a fuss. Much of Grand Seiko’s reputation comes from the Spring Drive, which has quietly become one of the brand’s most recognizable features.
What sets it different isn’t just its appearance, but also how it functions. The watch uses a traditional mechanical movement powered by a mainspring, yet it offers accuracy which seems nearly electronic. This blend is what creates the smooth, continuous motion of the seconds hand. At first, it could seem like a small detail, but once you see it, it’s hard to ignore. This is a classic Grand Seiko feature, and now the brand is building on it with something new.

After showing the updated Spring Drive calibre at Watches & Wonders, Grand Seiko has now launched the Evolution 9 Collection Spring Drive U.F.A. Limited Edition. This new model highlights the “Ultra Fine Accuracy” idea, not just as a label but as a real improvement in the brand’s focus on precision. It is part of the Evolution 9 line, which is already known for its refined style. The watch blends sharp design with everyday comfort in a way that feels thoughtful and balanced.
The watch features a compact 37mm case made from Grand Seiko’s Ever-Brilliant Steel, which is more corrosion-resistant and offers a brighter, cleaner look than regular stainless steel. While the difference may seem small in writing, it stands out in person, especially next to the dial. The design also nods to the brand’s history, with details inspired by the original 44GS from 1967, such as sharp hands and indexes for easy reading, a screw-down crown, and a sapphire caseback that reveals the movement.
The dial brings the design together. It has a soft violet colour that changes with the light, and a textured surface that adds depth without being overpowering. Like many Grand Seiko watches, it takes inspiration from nature—specifically, the early morning light over frost-covered forests in the Shinshu region of Japan, where these watches are made. The colour gradually shifts toward the center, suggesting light breaking through a cold landscape and giving the watch even more character.
The main highlight is the new Spring Drive U.F.A. calibre, which improves the accuracy for which Grand Seiko is known. The second hand still moves smoothly and continuously, but now with even greater precision, living up to the Ultra Fine Accuracy name. Since this is a limited edition, it feels like more than just another release—it shows Grand Seiko raising its standards once again.

At the centre of it all is the new Spring Drive Calibre 9RB2, where Grand Seiko really pushes things forward. The brand has always been strong in accuracy, but this movement takes it a step further without changing what works. It still runs on the Spring Drive setup, powered by a mainspring but controlled with greater precision. It stays compact, measuring around 30mm wide and just over 5mm thick, so it fits nicely without making the watch feel bulky.
What’s impressive is how accurate it’s meant to be, around ±20 seconds a year, which you don’t usually expect from this kind of movement. According to Grand Seiko, much of that comes from updates behind the scenes, including a more refined oscillator and a redesigned circuit working together to keep things stable over time. They’ve also sealed certain parts to protect against temperature changes and humidity, and there’s a small adjustment system used during servicing if needed. It’s technical when you get into it, but from a wearer’s point of view, it means everything runs smoothly and stays consistent over the long run.
Grand Seiko is making this release quite exclusive, with only 1,300 Evolution 9 Spring Drive U.F.A. watches available worldwide. The price is set at USD $11,100, which reflects both its refined design and the new movement inside. The watch is expected to arrive in November 2025. You’ll find it at Grand Seiko boutiques and a select group of authorized retailers, so it may be hard to get.
